NSW Government Approves Course to Boost Career and Life Skills in Students

October 2024

In a groundbreaking move for the outdoor industry and student health and wellbeing, the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) has officially approved the inclusion of the Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership in the curriculum for Year 11 and 12 students in NSW government schools. This initiative, supported by Outdoors NSW & ACT and its members in collaboration with educational leaders, marks a significant enhancement in educational offerings and career pathway opportunities for young Australians.

Starting from the next academic year, students across NSW will have the unique opportunity to enrol in the Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership. This qualification is designed to equip students with critical life skills through experiential learning methods not typically available in traditional classroom settings.

Lori Modde, CEO of Outdoors NSW & ACT, expressed enthusiasm about the new program: "We are thrilled to see this being approved, it’s a major step forward in recognising the value of outdoor education in our school curriculum. Our young people will gain not just skills relevant to a career in the burgeoning outdoor industry, but also invaluable life skills that promote personal growth, resilience, and leadership."

The introduction of this certification opens a myriad of possibilities for students, offering insights into viable career paths within the outdoor recreation and leadership sector. By integrating this certificate into the school curriculum, NSW is setting a precedent for educational innovation that provides students with career ready skills while aligning with the needs and interests of young people today.

The program not only aims to foster a connection with the outdoors but also to address the holistic development of students, emphasising physical health, mental wellbeing, and social skills. In a time when the importance of mental and physical health is ever-increasing, practical learning experiences such as these are invaluable.

NESA’s approval of this program reflects a commitment to educational diversity and the development of future leaders equipped to handle both the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow’s world. It acknowledges the critical role that the natural environment and leadership skills play in the comprehensive development of young individuals.
