Bombo Quarry Opportunity

At Outdoors NSW & ACT, we are committed to promoting and advocating for outdoor recreation across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Recently, and recently we had the opportunity to provide feedback on the Bombo Quarry Draft Masterplan, and we're excited to share our thoughts with our community.

A Vision for Outdoor Opportunities

Bombo Quarry holds immense potential as a unique outdoor recreation destination. Our primary goal is to ensure that outdoor activities, particularly rock climbing, are considered in the planning and development of this area. The inclusion of outdoor activities in such developments not only enhances community access to nature but also brings significant social and economic benefits.

Why Bombo Quarry Matters for Rock Climbers

Rock climbing is more than just a sport; it's an activity deeply connected to outdoor education, recreation, and leadership. Climbers understand the importance of environmental sustainability, and their passion often drives them to become protectors of the environment they love to explore. The unique basalt composition of Bombo Quarry makes it an ideal location for climbing, and its development as a climbing hub could attract enthusiasts from across Australia and beyond.

An Opportunity for Growth and Learning

Outdoor education is gaining traction, and rock climbing is becoming increasingly integrated into education and community programs. The Kiama Community College, a local leader in outdoor education, teaches rock climbing and roping skills, further highlighting the relevance of this activity in the region. With climbing also now an Olympic sport, its popularity and participation have grown, opening doors for more community engagement and economic opportunities.

Supporting Our Growing Industry

According to our recent Outdoor Industry Census, there are over 57,000 workers in our sector, with a substantial number holding accredited training in outdoor leadership. However, we face a significant worker shortage, highlighting the potential for growth in this sector. By unlocking areas like Bombo Quarry for outdoor recreation, we can create more jobs, attract visitors, and enhance the overall well-being of our communities.

A Unique Destination in the Making

Bombo Quarry's redevelopment offers a unique opportunity to create an iconic destination for climbers. With its extensive vertical basalt walls, the area could become a prime spot for both local and visiting climbers. The history of climbing in Bombo Quarry dates back decades, and we believe it's time to revive and celebrate this legacy by incorporating climbing opportunities into the master plan.

Learning from Successful Case Studies

We encourage the developers to consider successful case studies from across Australia, such as Albury Quarry in NSW, Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, and Mountain Quarry in WA. These sites demonstrate how integrating rock climbing facilities can bring significant community and economic benefits.

Looking Ahead

At Outdoors NSW & ACT, we are eager to work with stakeholders to ensure that outdoor activities, particularly rock climbing, are included in the Bombo Quarry Master Plan. We believe that doing so will enhance the visitor economy, support our community, and create a thriving hub for outdoor enthusiasts. We join members, Australian Climbing Association of NSW in supporting this possibility.

We hope to see the Bombo Quarry transformed into a vibrant outdoor recreation destination.
